We have clients come in all the time thinking that Botox (or Dysport) does everything on the face from creases to folds to lines, Botox must be the answer. In reality, Botox has many uses but dermal filler is often used when you can’t use Botox. Here are the differences between the two treatments:
Botox is used for muscle relaxation only. If you relax a muscle, you can get smoother skin with significant improvement in wrinkles and lines. Botox is super easy with no downtime. However, you should not have certain muscles relaxed on the face or you won’t smile or talk, etc. So Botox does have it’s limitations. We also love Dysport which is a Botox alternative that works faster than Botox in many cases. Botox and Dysport last about 3-6 months and is dosage dependent (meaning the higher the dosage, the longer people generally last). In general, the forehead, between the brows and crow’s feet are the most common areas for Botox and Dysport.
Dermal fillers like Restylane, Juvederm and Belotero to name a few are a gel substance made of hyaluronic acid that is used to lift and smooth out lines and folds. Fillers can be used for saggy skin and depressions as well as acne scarring. It is an instant correction that lasts 1-2 years. In addition, filler stimulates collagen so long term you will have longer lasting results. Filler can be used in the nasolabial folds, around the mouth, lip lines, smile creases, acne scarring, folds between the eyes and more. Filler has lots of uses and it is considered highly satisfying and natural looking results in our practice.
