Have you ever looked at someone’s social media pictures and you thought “they don’t look anything like that“? These perfect social media faces are everywhere! They have no pores, no wrinkles, no under eye circles or even a pimple. These faces don’t ever age! They don’t have any sun damage and their brows are flawless. Their entire face is flawless on all their pictures. Or are they? Welcome to the world, the obsession, of filters. Photoshop and filters are everywhere. Even the Real Housewives have filters on them when they are being interviewed (much less the professional makeup). Filters are wonderful in many way and a ton of fun but they can also create some negative, unexpected impact on self-esteem. We should be cautious about how filters make us see the world and how they make us see ourselves.
The biggest impact we see at our Delaware med spa is that filters may give you unrealistic goals to look a certain way. For example, people want to look like they have no pores. That is unrealistic. If you have visible pores, there is nothing that will magically take them away (pores are necessary too). You can remove the congestion within the pores with a facial and peels and so forth, but you will have pores. Filters can also slim your face and change your look completely. This is facial modification. This can also create unrealistic goals for enhancements that can be done without surgery.
When you bring in a picture of a celebrity that you want to look and they have flawless features, most likely the photo is filtered or photoshopped. Even when you show us a picture of yourself as an example of what you want to look like again, make sure you are showing a photo that your camera wasn’t set to “enhance” the photo in the first place. These old photos are not a good indication sometimes of what you really looked like at that time.
