Ever notice that when you wake up you have more lines in a variety of places that weren’t there before you went to bed? These lines are known as sleep lines and they are very common at every age. There are a few treatments that can be done to improve sleep lines and there are some treatments like Botox that are not effective on these lines.
A common area for sleep lines is the forehead and these lines are distinguished from aging and motion lines because these lines are diagonal on the forehead. Typical forehead lines from motion of the forehead muscles are horizontal or slightly curved like an upside down smile. Lines between the brows are vertical or horizontal. Sleep lines are diagonal and usually occur on the sides of the forehead. What can you do for forehead sleep lines? You can try to change the position of how you sleep (very hard) or do skin therapies like microneedling or lasers. Many patients ask if Botox or Dysport will not help and the answer is no. These lines are not from motion so Botox would not improve these types of lines.
Another common area for sleep lines is at the corner of the mouth. These sleep lines do respond to dermal fillers like Restylane or Juvederm to smooth them out. Dermal fillers are a great way to improve all lines and wrinkles around the mouth area.
The mid-cheek can also be affected by sleep lines and Botox will not work on sleep lines in this area. However, dermal fillers or skin therapies like microneedling can help. The main goal is to distinguish lines that are formed from muscles moving and lines that are formed from sleeping. Different therapies can help achieve your goals to improve wrinkles.
