Melasma is dark patches on the skin that look like islands not freckles. Melasma can be extremely challenging to manage and control. If you suffer from melasma, here are a few tips about treating it and what to expect.
- Melasma gets better and suddenly and abruptly can look worse. Often melasma can look darker in the summer than in the winter.
- The reason it looks worse in the summer is because of sun exposure and heat. Just being hot in the shade can make melasma worse. Wearing a hat can sometimes make melasma look worse, ironically, from the enclosed heat. You should avoid saunas and hot tubs if you have melasma.
- Melasma can be induced and influenced by hormones including pregnancy, menopause and polycystic ovarian syndrome.
- When it occurs, melasma can be extremely frustrating to anyone who has it and they can feel defeated in their attempt to treat it.
Our recommendations for anyone who has melasma is to figure out with your physician if you have a hormonal imbalance and treat that first, if possible. Second, we have a program of skin care products and sunblocks that specifically treat melasma and excess pigmentation that we have seen reliable results and significant improvement with client relief. In addition to melasma, there may be other skin conditions like sensitivities, rosecea and acne and it is important to know how to treat those conditions in combination which our skin care provider, Shae Ryan, is well experienced at. She is a skin guru and will customize a program for you and you will have access to her during this process. She will be there! Melasma on-call provider.
After the skin is conditioned, we can consider adding chemical peels that are specifically formulated to attack melasma at its core. We have had very compelling results with our medical grade chemical peels to take the results of melasma to the next level.
